Former champ Jackson leads U.S. Mid-Amateur

Richard Berkmeyer carded a three-under 67 at Brown Deer Park and shares third place with Randy Haag, who played Milwaukee. Gene Elliot and Sean Knapp are tied for fifth at minus-two.

Jackson played the back nine first and carded three birdies and two bogeys. Around the turn, Jackson birdied three of the first four holes to jump up the leaderboard. He birdied the ninth, his last, for the first-round lead.

Phil Mickelson's brother, Tim, carded a one-under 69 and shares seventh with Brian Haskell, G. Davis Boland and Michael Muehr.

Former champions Danny Green (1999) and Nathan Smith (2003) are among 12 players tied for 11th at even-par 70.
